About Kelimin

The art of kilim, for today.

A kilim is an old weaving art: flat-woven, without pile, with clear fields and patterns, made by hand thread by thread. Kelimin brings this art into the rooms of today.

Rugs come first: kilims and gabbehs in 100 % virgin wool. Every yarn is spun by hand, warp and weft are wool, and the weaving is done by hand by our weaving partner. The coloured pieces are dyed with plants, such as red from madder and blue from indigo; the undyed ones carry the colours of the sheep themselves. Under every piece a strip shows its true colours in their share.

From the same handwoven material we are now making new forms: cushions, bags and cases, designed and sewn by Kelimin from newly woven kilim. We will show them here as soon as they are ready.

Premium materials at a fair price, every rug one of a kind: once it is sold, there is no second one.

Handwoven rug in a light living room

The wool

The wool is shorn from living sheep and spun by hand, never processed by machine. Warp and weft are wool. The wool gets no chemical finish, so its natural lanolin stays in the fibre. It keeps dirt out and makes every piece last.

A light smell of wool at first is a sign of untreated wool. It fades after two or three days of fresh air.

The colours

Plant-dyed

The coloured pieces are dyed with plant colours: red from madder, yellow from weld, blue from indigo, grey tones from pomegranate peel. Small shifts of tone across the surface (abrash) show that the wool was dyed by hand in small batches.

Undyed

The undyed pieces show the colours of the sheep themselves: cream, beige, grey, brown and black. With no dye bath, no colour can run when the rug is cleaned.

Kilim and gabbeh

A kilim is flat-woven, without pile. Almost all our kilims are double-sided: both sides show the pattern. A gabbeh has a soft pile; a gabbeh kilim combines pile with flat-woven areas. Gabbehs have one show side.

Premium quality at a fair price

Good wool, handwork at every step and a fair price. All prices include VAT and are shown with every piece; shipping within Germany is free.

Care

  • Shake out regularly or vacuum without the brush.
  • Blot spills at once with clear water, do not rub.
  • Turn the rug now and then so sun and footsteps spread evenly.
